After Aurora, Revisiting Comments Made After the Supreme Court’s 5-4 Gun Rights Ruling in 2010

These are some of the comments that were made after the Supreme Court’s 5-4 Gun / Second Amendment Ruling June 2010 (McDonald v. Chicago)

  • Chicago Mayor Richard Daley : “Common sense tells you we need fewer guns on the street, not more guns.”

Mayor Daley suggested the court’s decision reflected a lack of understanding of the tragedies wrought by gun violence … “many of our highest-level officials don’t understand that gun violence pervades America, not just Chicago,” he said.

  • Kristen Rand, legislative director of the Violence Policy Center, which supports strict gun-control laws, predicted more than a new tide of lawsuits.

“People will die because of this decision,” she said. “It is a victory only for the gun lobby and America’s fading firearms industry.”

  • “It’s going to be city by city, town by town, block by block,” National Rifle Association Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre vowed … “We’re going to have to work into every level to make sure this constitutional victory isn’t turned into a practical defeat.”
  •  Justice Breyer read portions of his dissent from the bench … warning the new ruling would interfere with legislative efforts nationwide to control firearms and violence.
  •  “Just as (firearms) can help homeowners defend their families and property from intruders,” Justice Stevens wrote, “they can help thugs and insurrectionists murder innocent victims. The threat that firearms will be misused is far from hypothetical, for gun crime has devastated many of our communities.” 1

Three questions:

  1. If not the time for politics, is it time for common sense?
  2. Is there a right, a freedom, a liberty for young mothers, boys and girls, fathers and sons to see a movie or live in America without fear of random gun violence?
  3. What of their constitutional rights to life, and liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

President Obama, You Didn’t Say That, Somebody Else Did

OK, going to defend Barack, my president, here. (May not vote for him, but going to defend him.)

Even the gifted, eloquent are not immune from putting a foot in their mouth sometimes.

When President Obama said,

If you’ve got a business – you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen“,

he was trying to ride on the populist point Massachusetts senate candidate Elizabeth Warren made (reasonably well), when she said (paraphrasing), “If you built a company, and made it, good for you, keep most of it, but you didn’t do it all by yourself, so pay your fair share for the next kids who come along.”

Kind of a “Pay It Forward” reminder for the successful – who took a risk, and through hard work and the force of determination in the fertile ground of American free enterprise – are making it and are successful.

But President Obama mangled it into a sometimes-little-things-say-the-most statement of what may be his real feelings about American free enterprise vs. government spending and control.

It’s true that lots of aspects go into it (education, roads, American foundation of free enterprise) but even IN context, “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen” sounds naive, lacking real-world experience, Washington/government-ese … not to mention anti-small-business and anti-free enterprise.

But, giving him the benefit of the doubt – he just mangled his thoughts and words from a reasonable “government assisted by providing these things” into “you didn’t do this, we did” distortion.

A president so eloquent will no doubt be able to explain this away, at least for the (D) party faithful.

Actually rooting for him. I shudder to think this is his real belief.
