How To Transfer Bookmarks From One Browser to Another

Previously we talked about how to customize 411US.info by using the bookmarks toolbar. This works very well unless you’re transitioning over to a new browser and have too many bookmarks to go through and re-bookmark one by one.

That’s why today we’ll go over the steps of transferring bookmarks from one browser to another. I’ll show you how to do it in FireFox 16.0.1, Chrome 22, and IE 9, then provide you with links for other browser versions since each browser version is a little bit different.

Exporting & Importing Bookmarks from FireFox 16.0.1

Export Bookmarks FireFox Step1To export your bookmarks from FireFox, you’ll start by clicking on the orange main menu button in the top left of the browser.

  1. Click on the orange main menu button
  2. Hover over Bookmarks
  3. Click “Show All Bookmarks”

You can also use the keyboard shortcut ctrl+shift+B to show all of your bookmarks.

A new window will pop up. At the top of the screen click “Import and Backup”. Then select “Export Bookmarks to HTML…” to export your bookmarks. Save the file in a place that is easy to access. To import bookmarks, select “Import Bookmarks from HTML” instead of the export option.

Export Bookmarks FireFox Step2

Exporting & Importing Bookmarks from Chrome 22

Export Bookmarks Chrome Step1It’s fairly easy to import and export bookmarks from Chrome. Here’s what you’ll need to do:

  1. Click on the Chrome menu button (it looks like three horizontal lines in the top right)
  2. Hover over Bookmarks
  3. Click “Bookmark Manager”

You can also get to the Bookmark Manager with the keyboard shortcut ctrl+shift+O.

A new tab or window will pop up, depending on your preferences, displaying the Bookmark Manager. Click on the Organize button in the menu of the Bookmark Manager. At the bottom of the drop down you’ll see import and export options.

Click “Export Bookmarks to HTML File…” to export your bookmarks. Save them in an easy to find place. Use “Import Bookmarks from File…” to import an HTML bookmark file that was previously exported.

Export Bookmarks Chrome Step2

Exporting & Importing Favorites from Internet Explorer 9

Export Bookmarks IE Step1Internet Explorer refers to Bookmarks as “Favorites.” Importing and exporting favorites from Internet Explorer is a little bit different.

  1. Click on File
  2. Click on “Import and export…”

A windows wizard will pop up to help guide you through importing and exporting. Your very first choice is deciding whether you’re going to import or export. Once you choose either option you’ll be presented with another set of choices asking you if you want to do your import or export on Favorites, Feeds, or Cookies.

Once you’ve chosen what you want to import or export you’ll be prompted to either save an HTML file or import an HTML file.

Export Bookmarks IE Step2

Browser Versions Not Covered In This Post

All browser versions are a little bit different so the steps needed may be a little different than what was covered in this post. Here are some links where you can find out more information about exporting and importing bookmarks from different browser versions.

How To Use 411US.info While Traveling to Get Local Information

When you’re traveling for vacation, family, or just a fun road trip it helps to know a bit about the local area. You can use 411US.info to get local information such as:

  • Weather
  • Traffic
  • Maps
  • TV Stations
  • Newspapers
  • and More

For this post we’ll talk about some of the links listed above as well as some unlisted ones. We’ll be using 411Orlando.info as an example vacation place.

Let the travels begin!

The Scenario

You and a few of your good friends have decided to go on a week-long vacation together in Orlando. As you’re unpacking in your hotel room you have a sudden realization: All of the maps and local information you had printed out was left on your kitchen counter and your friend with the extra key is unpacking their suitcase right beside you.

Even though you feel like you wasted time printing everything out, you know that you still have your handy laptop with 411US.info set as your home page.

Once you’re unpacked you start up your laptop and type “411Orlando.info” into the URL bar. You’re quickly redirected to the Orlando zip code and suddenly tons of local information is at your finger tips.

Traveling with 411US.info Check WeatherFirst things first, you check the weather (you Weather Bug you!). Looks like it’ll be a pretty warm day! Good thing you packed plenty of T-shirts. Later on it’ll be a bit cooler so you’ll need that hoodie you packed.

Your next mission is to find out what the local the local TV stations are to keep your channel-flipping-friend happy and not browsing through all of the channels full of static.

Traveling with 411US.info Find TV StationsUnder the Local Information menu on 411US.info you click on TV Stations and a list of local TV stations appears in the center of the page. Quickly you click on the first TV Station listed and give your friend the channel to turn to. Finally, the static stops and a clear channel is playing.

However, you know this will only satisfy your friend for so long. Still under the Local Information menu you start your next mission to find a TV station that will keep your friend’s interest long enough for you to finish your local information search.

Clicking on TV Listings brings you to another website with the TV listings for your home zip code. Using the Orlando zip code from 411US.info you easily change it to the TV listings to those for Orlando. Not even a minute later your friend has their favorite TV station playing and you’re free to continue your local information search.

Even though everyone is currently satisfied with unpacking and hanging around the hotel room you know they’re going to want to hit the town for dinner soon. Clicking Local Reviews takes you to the Orlando section of Yelp. From there you go into the Restaurant section and try to find something close with good reviews.

Traveling with 411US.info Local Traffic InformationAh! You found something that looks good and it’s only a few miles away. Before you announce your great find to your friends you take a look at the Traffic under the Local Information menu. If things are too busy you might want to change your choice!

Fortunately the main intersection near you looks pretty clear (or as clear as you figure it will be for Orlando traffic). Time to release the good news about dinner!

The final step for tonight is to find out how to get from the hotel to the restaurant. Using the Transportation link on 411US.info you’re taken to a site that’s full of public transportation information for Florida.

You find that the main bus company for Orlando is Lynx. After putting inĀ  your start and end destinations you find out where and when you and your friends need to meet up with the bus.

Finally you close all of your excess tabs and click on TV Stations one more time to clear it out of the center of the page.

Tonight is taken care of, but tomorrow brings a whole new adventure for you and your friends to tackle with a little help from 411US.info.

But wait! When you click on one of your custom sites in the Bookmarks Toolbar it takes you away from your homepage! There are a few ways to have your bookmarks open in a new tab or window.

Get Custom Bookmarks to Open in a New Tab/Window

First we’ll talk about two ways that will always work no matter the browser, then we’ll look at tweaks you can do for certain browsers to ensure your bookmarks are always opening in a new tab or window.

The Right Click Method

This is one of the more obvious solutions. When you want to open a link in a new tab or window, you can right click on the link and choose either “Open in new window” or “Open in new tab.”

The Middle Click Method

Middle clicking is something not everyone is familiar with, but will cause you to fall instantly in love with it if you enjoy having different sites open in different tabs or windows.

  1. Check to see if your mouse has a scroll wheel between the left and right buttons
  2. Hover over a link
  3. Click the scroll wheel as if you were clicking the left or right buttons

Your link will open in a new tab or window, depending on your browser settings.

The Other Methods

We won’t get into all of the other methods you can use to open your bookmarks in new tabs or windows, but we’ll list a few ways:

  • Install a browser add-on or extension
  • Use javascript when setting up your bookmarks
  • ctrl+left click

If you’d like to investigate these other methods of opening your bookmark links in new windows or tabs, here’s a nice link to the Google search on making bookmarks open in new tabs.

Have fun customizing 411US.info!
